The season isn't over for the Carolina Panthers after an 0-2 start, but it appears to be over for starting linebacker Shaq Thompson. Head coach Frank Reich told reporters Tuesday afternoon that he did fracture his fibula during the loss to New Orleans on Monday night.

"He did have a successful surgery this morning. He's doing well," Reich stated. "He will likely miss the remainder of the season. Tough loss. Obviously, he's a great player. He's our emotional leader. I know the guys will pick it up for him and he's behind us and supporting us in every way that he can."

Shortly after Reich's press conference, the team announced that Thompson had been placed on injured reserve, joining cornerback Jaycee Horn, offensive lineman Brady Christensen, outside linebacker Marquis Haynes Sr., and tight end Stephen Sullivan.

Thompson has spent eight-plus seasons with the Panthers, meaning he is the second-longest tenured player on the roster behind only long-snapper JJ Jansen. For his career, Thompson has totaled 717 tackles, 52 tackles for loss, 31 QB hits, 26 pass breakups, 12 sacks, and three interceptions.

The Panthers now have two spots open on the 53-man roster.
