In this story:

Shocking news just spilled out in the NFL world as Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has informed the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks that he has opted to remain in Detroit, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Johnson was considered to be the top offensive-minded candidate this coaching cycle, drawing interest from most teams who had openings, including the Carolina Panthers.

Johnson interviewed for the Panthers' job last year and when Frank Reich was fired mid-season, everyone figured the Lions' OC would be who team owner David Tepper would heavily pursue. Carolina interviewed Johnson just once while Raheem Morris, Ejiro Evero, and Dave Canales went through two rounds of interviews. Brian Callahan was expected to get a second meeting with the Panthers brass but took the Tennessee job instead.

This year, Detroit's offense finished 3rd in total yards (394.8), 5th in rushing (135.9), and 5th in scoring (27.1 ppg). One would assume that Johnson will be the top head coaching candidate next year.
