Film Study: Raiders DL Tyree Wilson

Tyree Wilson can help the Las Vegas Raiders' pass rush from all over the defensive line.

The Las Vegas Raiders’ pass rush last season was not at the level the team would like it to be.

In 2022, the Raiders recorded just 27 sacks, fewest in the AFC. Outside of the Pro Bowl level production from Maxx Crosby, the Raiders have not had the consistency or depth necessary to be competitive when it comes to rushing the passer.

That’s where No. 7 overall pick Tyree Wilson comes in. Wilson recorded 14 sacks over his last two seasons at Texas Tech, and still has room to grow as a pass rusher. Wilson offers elite size at 6-6 and 275 pounds, along with versatility along the defensive line.

Let’s take a closer look at a few of Wilson’s best games last season and see how he can help the Raiders’ pass rush.

Watching Wilson’s tape, the most noticeable thing about him is his size. He looks the part of an NFL defensive lineman. Early on in the Red Raiders’ game against Kansas State, Wilson lined up in several ways. He lined up as a down lineman, as a stand up edge rusher, and on the interior. He also even covered running back Deuce Vaughn downfield, which is a difficult task.

Wilson showed off the speed and strength that made him enticing to the Raiders in this game. He finished the game with six tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, and one forced fumble.

Wilson was productive against North Carolina State as well, showing off his speed and lateral quickness. He moves incredibly well for a player his size. On one of his sacks, Wilson used one hand to push back his matchup and disregarded a late help from the guard to fly to the quarterback. He finished this game with 11 tackles, three and a half tackles for loss, and two sacks.

Tyree Wilson still has to develop as a pass rusher, but the Raiders will benefit from his size and raw physical profile. He has a chance to learn from Crosby and Chandler Jones, two players who have been productive pass rushers in their careers. If Wilson unlocks his full potential, he could be a star defensive lineman in the NFL.

The Raiders' offseason workout schedule is as follows:

OTA Offseason workouts: May 22-23, May 25, May 31-June 2, June 12-15

Mandatory Minicamp: June 6-8
