The Las Vegas Raiders made two significant additions in the offseason, signing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a three-year contract during free agency and selecting Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Garoppolo will take over as the starting quarterback, while Wilson factors in as a long-term piece on the team’s defense.

Garoppolo reportedly had a procedure on his foot, the same one that cost him games at the end of the 2022 season. He is expected to be ready to play Week 1, but the Raiders will be cautious.

Wilson recently was placed on the non-football injury list related to the foot injury he sustained last season at Texas Tech.

Garoppolo and Wilson were two of the Raiders’ biggest offseason acquisitions, and both are dealing with injury complications. They both are going to be important to the Raiders’ success this season, so their health will be crucial.

While Garoppolo is expected to be ready to go for the season, it’s important to note his extensive history with injuries. He has suffered several significant ailments throughout his career, including a torn ACL and this most recent foot injury.

Garoppolo has the most important job on the field, so the Raiders need him to have a healthy season in order to be successful. He knows Coach Josh McDaniels’ offense, and when he has been healthy, has led his teams far.

The problem is, Garoppolo has played 15 or more games in a season only twice in his career. The Raiders are hoping he can make it three.

Wilson is entering his rookie season, and while he does not need to necessarily make an immediate impact, playing in his first year will be helpful for his game, as he is supremely athletic but raw as a technical pass rusher.

Once he gets adjusted to the speed of the NFL, he can start improving his technique and earning himself more reps, either as an outside pass rusher or a disruptor on the inside.

The health of Garoppolo and Wilson will be crucial to the Raiders’ success in 2023. If the team has playoff aspirations, they will need both of them present on the field.

The Las Vegas Raiders open training camp for the entire team on July 25, 2023.

The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
