Report: The Raiders Will Try to Sign Jacobs

The Las Vegas Raiders are unlikely to use their franchise tag on running back Josh Jacobs again. It appears that the Raiders will do what they can to sign him.

After the Las Vegas Raiders used their franchise tag on him, the team and running back Josh Jacobs spent all last season at a stalemate on contract negotiations.

After leading the league in rushing in 2022, Jacobs felt he deserved more money and a long-term deal.

The two sides could not agree on such a deal, but Jacobs would sign a one-year contract with the team after holding out for the entire offseason.

Jacobs would return to the team, but wouldn't have a repeat of the type of season he had in 2022.

After a down season this year, Jacobs finds himself in a similar position as last offseason. Except this time, he's a year older, coming off a season with a dip in production, and not a season where he led the league in rushing.

Jacobs also missed the last few games because of injuries, somewhat proving owners who don't want to pay running backs top dollar because of the wear and tear.

The Las Vegas Raiders will attempt to keep running back Josh Jacobs in Silver and Black.

As good as Jacobs has been since being selected by the Raiders in the first round of the 2019 draft, the Raiders still have to be wise in finding a way to keep Jacobs at a reasonable rate next season.

Most would agree Las Vegas should bring him back, but it must be at a team-friendly price. Because of this, the Raiders are unlikely to use the franchise tag on Jacobs.

Our Hondo S. Carpenter, Sr., has been reporting since the season ended that: "The Raiders aren't going to franchise tag J.J., but he wants to be a Raider, he told me that, and they want him.  They will work to make that happen."

Now, a new report confirms what Carpenter has been saying all along.

ESPN's Adam Schefter says the Raiders will try to sign Jacobs but not at the cost they'd have to pay if they used the franchise tag on him for a second consecutive season.

This makes sense for the Raiders, as they should be able to sign Jacobs to a deal worth less per year than what they would have to pay him under the franchise tag.

"The Raiders will attempt to re-sign free-agent-to-be running back Josh Jacobs," Schefter said. "But they are not expected to tag him, not with his franchise tag costing $14,149,200, according to league sources."

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
