Raiders Opponent Underrated Player: Michael Davis

In this story:
The Las Vegas Raiders will travel to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., on Sunday to take on the AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers.
The Raiders are looking to avoid dropping a third consecutive game, while the Chargers avoided doing just that last week.
These two AFC West opponents have been fairly evenly matched over the last couple of seasons. In their last 20 games, the Raiders and Chargers have split the series, 10-10.
The Chargers are a bit banged up on defense, but one player who is healthy for the game is cornerback Michael Davis, who has been an underrated, quality piece for the Chargers’ defense over the last few seasons.
Davis joined the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of BYU in 2017. Since then, he has posted 304 total tackles, 62 passes defended, one sack and seven interceptions. The seven-year veteran’s name is not often brought up when discussing the Chargers defense, but he has been an impressive contributor to their secondary.
Davis has played in 12 career games against the Silver and Black, posting 38 total tackles and 10 passes defended. In those games, Davis has been targeted 48 times and has allowed 33 completions for 445 yards and two touchdowns, according to Pro Football Focus.
With great size for a cornerback at 6-foot-2 and 196 pounds, Davis uses his long, wiry frame to get into the body of his receiver. Davis played a lot of press man-to-man defense last season and did more than hold his own against some of the top receivers in the league.
When discussing the best cornerbacks in the NFL, Davis’ name does not come up. He might not be an elite player at his position, but he is certainly a quality starter many teams would like to have in their defensive backfield.
The Raiders will have a tough challenge with the Chargers’ defensive backs, and possibly none more so than Davis. With his long frame and elite press man coverage skills, Davis is sure to make his presence felt in the game on Sunday, no matter which receiver he is covering.
The Silver and Black return to the road this week in Inglewood, Calif., to play the Los Angeles Chargers (1-2) on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 4:05 p.m. EDT/1:05 p.m. PDT.
