Former Raiders Executive Weighs in on Garoppolo Noise

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's future with the team could be jeopardized depending on the extent of his left foot injury.

Any excitement surrounding the addition of veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has simmered throughout the Las Vegas Raiders' organized team activities.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk dissected the details of Garoppolo's contract in an article on Sunday, revealing that he and the Raiders had agreed on a waiver and release clause.

With Garoppolo still feeling the effects of his foot injury from December that led to offseason surgery, the quarterback could be off the field for any team activities as late as training camp, which Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels announced last Thursday.

With this aforementioned clause -- Addendum G -- in Garoppolo's contract, the Raiders will not owe the quarterback his salary until he passes a physical.

Former Raiders Senior Personnel Executive, Michael Lombardi, said the Silver and Black shouldn't be concerned.

"I'm not anyone special, but I spent 35 years in the National Football League," Lombardi said on "The GM Shuffle" podcast on Monday. "I did a lot of contracts. And I would say in 70 percent of those contracts that I did, there was an injury waiver of some sort, especially on a veteran player. They signed an injury waiver on the specific injury. Does this mean if he breaks his arm, they could cut him? No. It's only specifically around the second metatarsal. This is common. OK? I keep repeating this. All right?

"So now, they know that that's what they want to do, and now, they plan the course of action. 'OK, we're going to have the operation done, you're going to be in a boot, you're going to be in the building, boom, boom, boom. And we move forward.' And I think anybody who makes more of that than what it really is doesn't understand the National Football League. Garoppolo is expected to be their quarterback, and unless something catastrophic happens with his foot, he will be the quarterback. And all this conversation that we're having in May on Memorial Day will be looked at as: 'Oh, that was just for clicks.'"

Lombardi is the father of Raiders offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi.

The Raiders' offseason workout schedule is as follows:

OTA Offseason workouts: May 31-June 2, June 12-15

Mandatory Minicamp: June 6-8
