Raiders Opponent Scouting: Detroit Lions Offense

In this story:
The Las Vegas Raiders are turning their attention to their next game in prime-time against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field in Detroit on Monday Night Football.
The Lions are one of the NFL's best teams this season, primarily due to their explosive offense. Detroit is fourth in the league in yards per game and seventh in the league in points per game.
Before putting up only six points in losing to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday, the Lions averaged 28 points per game. They have one of the best offenses in the NFL, with an impressive offensive line, capable running backs, and dynamic wide receivers.
Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson is the catalyst of the offense. What makes his unit so efficient has been his ability to adapt his scheme around his personnel. He has helped quarterback Jared Goff rise to a new level of play in the last few seasons, which has elevated the offense as a whole.
Johnson utilizes lots of pre-snap motion and play action to keep defenses guessing. He was a popular head coaching candidate last offseason, but decided to stay with the Lions. He is expected to be a popular candidate once again this offseason.
The Lions’ offensive line has been one of the best units in the NFL this season, led by right tackle Penei Sewell. He is Pro Football Focus’ eighth-highest graded offensive tackle this season. Center Frank Ragnow is also one of the best players in the league at his position, having allowed only one sack in the last four seasons.
At running back, rookie Jahmyr Gibbs is coming off his most productive game in the NFL with 126 total yards and a touchdown. Gibbs should continue to see his usage increase as the season goes on, as he is a rusher and receiver threat.
Amon-Ra St. Brown has been one of the most productive wide receivers since entering the league in 2021 and has 557 receiving yards this season. He is a quick, shifty wide receiver who gets open consistently and makes defenders miss after the catch.
Rookie tight end Sam LaPorta has been a star for the Lions this season, with 377 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The Raiders must respect what he can bring to the passing game, or he will find ways to beat them.
The Lions’ offense is difficult to defend because there are so many different weapons to account for, and Johnson puts them in advantageous positions as a play-caller.
Coach Josh McDaniels and Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham will have their hands full of game planning for this Lions team.
The Silver and Black will stay on the road to take on the Detroit Lions on Monday night, Oct. 30, at 8:15 p.m. EDT/5:15 p.m. PDT.
