Seven games are a large enough sample size to determine how good an offense, defense, or team is.

Through seven games, the Las Vegas Raiders' defense ranks as one of the best teams in the National Football League in passing yards and rushing yards allowed per game.

There is no doubt that Silver and Black now have a formidable defense. Last week, though, wasn't their best game.

Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels is ready to see Las Vegas' defense return to the defense they were the previous six games before they faced the Chicago Bears.

The Raiders plan on improving many aspects of their defense as they head to Detroit to play the Lions on Monday Night Football.

“Angles, breaking down, being under control, using your help," McDaniels said. "We had a stretch there where we were doing a really good job, I thought, of coning the ball carrier and trying to really stop the added yards, and last week certainly wasn't our best.

"So, I think they know that. We want to get back to the right mentality of playing good team defense, getting to the football, and just trying to stop all the extra yards that we gave up last week.”

Raiders Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham has done a great job of putting the defense in the right place. Last week, the Raiders failed to execute once they got to the ball, missing multiple tackles and giving up countless yards after contact.

“I've got to do a better job during the week of just getting our guys in the right position to be able to get the other guys down," Graham said.

Graham is prepared for the Detroit Lions' rushing attack on Monday night.

“No one's ever happy when the team is able to run the ball the way they [Chicago Bears] did," Graham said. "And looking at this week with Detroit, it's going to be the same thing in terms of how they like to run the ball. They do a good job.

"Their head coach, just his persona and just his personality, you could tell he's rooted in the running game and their success is rooted in the running game. So, we've got a challenge ahead of us right now, but we never want anybody to run the ball successfully. That's tough for a defense.”

Through seven games, the Raiders' defense has been the team's strength. They will need that to continue to be the case on Monday night against the Lions.

The Silver and Black will stay on the road to take on the Detroit Lions on Monday night, Oct. 30, at 8:15 p.m. EDT/5:15 p.m. PDT.
