Rams' Puka Nacua Reveals Cooper Kupp's Impact, Biggest Regret of Rookie Season

Los Angeles Rams rookie receiver Puka Nacua just capped off perhaps the best debut campaign a receiver has ever had. With the help of Cooper Kupp, he's getting better.

Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua didn’t take home the hardware for Offensive Rookie of the Year, but there’s no denying his first season was anything but a rousing success.

Going from Day 3 draft pick to a finalist for a major award is impressive in its own right, but there’s an argument to be had that no receiver has had a better rookie campaign. After filling in for superstar receiver Cooper Kupp and putting the football world on notice in Week 1, Nacua would go on to set the rookie record for receptions and receiving yards.

Nacua hasn’t been shy about the impact Kupp had on his immediate impact and his transition to the professional ranks. Even after such an incredible season, he’s continuing to lean on his veteran counterpart.

“The role model for me on the Rams has been Cooper Kupp,” Nacua said. “He’s been a big brother to me. He’s given his best effort every time he’s out there. I want to work out that in the offseason.”

Nacua isn’t known for his lack of effort by any stretch of the imagination. His versatility, toughness over the middle of the field, and willingness to block have stood out not only to head coach Sean McVay but to fans and peers around the league, earning him a reputation.

The BYU product finished his season with 105 receptions on 160 targets, generating 1,486 yards and six touchdowns. However, he led the league in drops (13), was second in drop percentage (11 percent), and ranked 21st among 41 qualified receivers in catch rate.

Embodying Kupp, Nacua looks to improve upon those marks.

“I learned that I led the league in drops,” Nacua said on “GoJo and Golic.” “So I can never let that happen again.”

Nacua has consistently attempted to channel his teammate, going as far as to say he stopped playing video games late at night to get better sleep – “Cooper Kupp wouldn’t like that,” he said.

It’ll be difficult to recreate the monstrous production he had in his rookie season, but if Nacua’s offseason comments are any indication, he’ll do more than just cement himself as a part of Los Angeles’ plans.

Coming back stronger in his second season can help ensure the torch is passed successfully and the Rams' offense remains as potent -- if not more -- than this past season.
