Rams vs. 49ers ‘Tug of War’ to Sign Vikings QB Kirk Cousins?

While Matthew Stafford is the current Rams quarterback, Mike Florio listed them as a potential destination for Kirk Cousins.

It isn't often that a franchise-caliber quarterback hits the free-agent market. Before that occurs, they either sign a new record-breaking extension or get traded for a massive haul to jumpstart a team's rebuild.

However, one such quarterback will potentially be available next offseason in Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings. Cousins, who is entering the final year of his contract in Minnesota, has tabled extension discussions until next March - which is where the Los Angeles Rams could come in.

In a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, PFF's Mike Florio stated his belief that there could be a battle between the Rams and a NFC West foe for the veteran quarterback's services.

“I think you’re going to see - unless the Vikings re-sign him by then - a potential tug of war between (49ers coach) Kyle Shanahan and (Rams coach) Sean McVay for Kirk Cousins next March,” Florio said. “Mark that down.”

Before we jump forward to the 2024 season and Cousins potentially donning the Rams' blue and gold, the elephant in the room must be discussed. That elephant, of course, being Matthew Stafford

Stafford is under contract with the Rams through the 2026 season, and isn't a free agent until 2027.

Cutting Stafford is not a feasible option for Los Angeles, as doing so carries a staggering $86.5 million dead cap hit.

Another possibility would be an offseason trade. But it, too, would not be a great option for the Rams. Doing so pre-June 1 carries a $55.5 million dead cap hit, with post-June 1 a slightly more palatable $18.5 million.

The only remedy that saves them money is the possibility that Stafford retires, as there were rumors surrounding the veteran quarterback this offseason after an injury shortened 2022 season. … and then there remain finances to be worked out.

Putting all the logistics and facts aside, there is allure to the idea of Cousins pairing up with McVay in Los Angeles. … but only if Stafford wants out. McVay, of course, was the offensive coordinator in Washington with Cousins from 2014-2016 before he took the Rams' coaching job and Cousins signed in Minnesota.

The possibility of a Cousins and McVay reunion in Los Angeles? Both guys will be 35 in this scenario … not much “allure” there.

So … For now the Rams and Stafford are a happy pair, and one that has no current plans of going their separate ways.
