Amidst crazy 24 hours, Nick Vannett is in Pittsburgh and "happy to be here"

Nick Vannett went coast to coast in a matter of hours after being traded to Pittsburgh, but despite one of the most hectic days of his career, the tight end is excited to be with the Steelers.

"It's been a crazy 24 hours," Vannett told the media following his first practice at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. "I didn't really know what to expect when I came here but everyone welcomed me in with open arms."

It was unexpected, but the tight end is ready to make his impact in Pittsburgh. The answer to the Steelers' tight end depth comes from Seattle, where he accumulated four receptions for 38 yards through the first three weeks.

In a new offense, Vannett should see an increased role. Vance McDonald missed the team's first practice of the week, and despite Mike Tomlin's optimism he'll play, his availability on Monday night could be limited. If McDonald does miss time with a shoulder injury, Vannett is already in line to step into the role in Week 4.

"I'm excited to put it on [Steelers uniform] and go there on Monday and represent," Vannett said.

As for entering a team that's winless through three games, Vannett isn't worried. "I feel like we have everything we need," Vannett said. "With the Seahawks, Week 2 we came in here and played and I remember gameplan like, 'man, the defense is really good'."

Vannett also knows about the Steelers' history of tight ends. A rundown that isn't deep during Vannett's time watching Pittsburgh, but one he's well aware of. "I was in high school and middle school, watching him [Heath Miller] thrive in this offense. Watching Vance thrive, and Jesse James, and all those other guys that have played before me," Vannett said.

And Steelers fandom? Vannett knows that as well as anyone. A Ohio native, Vannett says there were two options growing up - being a Steelers or Browns fan. "Obviously I'm not going to be a Browns fan," Vannett said. Immediately winning over the hearts of Steelers fans everywhere.
