Randy Fichtner says Steelers use of wildcat isn't gone, JuJu Smith-Schuster's struggles are part of the position

There's still a sense of something missing in the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense, but after Week 5, there could be more of an open concept for this unit moving forward.

Steelers Offensive Coordinator Randy Fichtner broke open a new offense during the team's 27-3 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. An offense that the NFL has seen before, but never found much long-term success with.

For Pittsburgh, they aren't converting to a wildcat offense, but they'll certainly keep it in their back pocket. According to Fichtner, it's something they'll keep an eye on with their group of guys.

"We have some new guys that can do some fun things," Fichtner said. "You got to pick and choose weekly based on who you're playing."

The wildcat did find success in the Steelers' route to win their first game of the 2019 season. The seven times the team ran it, they used a combination of dump passes and inside runs; utilizing their backfield duo of James Conner and Jaylen Samuels.

Moving forward, that isn't going to go away. The Steelers will continue to utilize their playbook, and open up the 'gimmicks' week to week.

"There's always gonna be something, probably every week," Fichtner said. "There's actually been new things in, in three weeks early than that didn't get recognized, maybe because it didn't have the success."

But the wildcat isn't the only concern of the Steelers' offense. The lack of productivity for names like JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington leaves worry within the offense, but Fichtner says that's just part of their role.

"That's part of the thing that comes with being in JuJu's position," Fichtner said. "He may attract more attention and that's why the other guys have to make plays."

As for the offense's gameplan, Fichtner says he's still working out the kinks after losing Ben Roethlisberger. For right now, it's still developing, but the goal is to help Mason Rudolph out as much as he can.

"We developed an entire package around our Hall of Fame quarterback, in the gun and gun runs; things that are very appealing to his eye," Fichtner said. "If you noticed we've been under center a whole lot more. That's an attempt to help our quarterback and help others."
