NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans tied up their last unresolved contract issue on Monday when restricted free agent Teair Tart officially signed his one-year contract worth $4.3 million. The deal will keep Tart with the Titans for one more season, at minimum.

Earlier in the offseason the Titans placed a second-round tender on Tart as he was a restricted free agent. This meant that if another team offered Tart a contract of his liking, the Titans had the option of matching that contract and retaining Tart or they would receive a second rounder from the team signing Tart if they didn't match.

Ultimately, no other team in the NFL offered Tart. This gave Tart few options. Either he signed his second-round tender and play on a one-year contract or he would sit out the season. Something a former undrafted free agent simply can't afford to do.

Tart hasn't let the contract situation prevent him from being with the team throughout practices in May. Tart signed a waiver giving him financial protection in case of injury that allowed him to participate with the team while his tender was unsigned.

Tart was the last player in the NFL to sign their tender and Tart certainly had to hope he could secure a long-term contract with the team rather than play on the one-year tender he received. Ultimately, that didn't happen.

Tart will now play out the 2023 season with an opportunity to become an unrestricted free agent next year. To capitalize on that opportunity, Tart will need to build off a strong 2022 and continue to improve in 2023.

In his three season with the Titans, Tart has played in 34 games. In those games he has put up 34 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and an interception. Those may not be gaudy numbers, but from the nose tackle position that is a nice stat line.

Nose tackles aren't typically given bigger contracts like you would see at other positions due to the limited nature of the role, so if Tart is looking for a big-time deal after the year, it most likely won't be with the Titans. Regardless, Tart is now under contract and both parties can move forward as they prepare for the season.
