Let's hope Kirk Cousins didn't open up his phone and click on the new Madden 24 trailer on Wednesday morning. If he did, he probably wouldn't have been thrilled with his role in the video.

In the newly-released trailer for the latest installment of the iconic NFL video game, Cousins catches not one, not two, but three major strays. He makes an appearance, but he isn't throwing a touchdown pass to Justin Jefferson. No, he's shown (starting at the 28-second mark) overthrowing K.J. Osborn for an interception to Trevon Diggs, getting pancaked by Micah Parsons during the INT return, and then getting taunted by Parsons to wrap it all up.

I get wanting to show off Diggs and Parsons, two young star defensive players on a marquee team, but did it really have to come at Cousins' expense?

It's almost too on the nose. Cousins has long been a punching bag of NFL fans and media narratives for various, mostly unfair reasons. His record in primetime games, lack of playoff success, and large contract make him an easy target, as does his dorky dad personality.

Things seemed to be shifting last season. Cousins led the league in fourth-quarter comebacks and game-winning drives during a 13-win season, and he also showed off a different side of his personality by leaning into the "Kirko Chains" bit on postgame flights after road wins. But then he threw a checkdown on 4th and 8 to end the Vikings' season in the wild card round, which may have undone all of that progress.

Now he's getting violated by video game trailers.

Cousins, of course, won't care much about this if he ever even sees it. He's used to it. It's just amusingly predictable that he's the guy who ends up on the wrong side of the highlights in this trailer.

Jefferson makes a positive appearance around 50 seconds in, making a catch against Antoine Winfield Jr. and celebrating. Despite some unfounded recent rumors that the Vikings' superstar WR was going to be the cover athlete for Madden 24, that honor (curse?) went to Bills QB Josh Allen instead.

The only Vikings player to ever grace the cover of the game is still Daunte Culpepper in Madden 2002.
