In this story:

The Vikings are losing assistant quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson — a potential rising star in the profession — to the Houston Texans, where he'll be the QBs coach.

This is a nice promotion for Johnson, who is just 34 years old. After a year spent working with Kirk Cousins and the Vikings' other quarterbacks on Kevin O'Connell's staff, he'll be a position coach for the first time in 2023. It's quite the important role, as Houston holds the No. 2 overall pick and is in prime position to land one of the draft's top quarterbacks: Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud. Johnson will work closely with that player and could be in the mix for offensive coordinator jobs sooner or later if the Texans' offense has success.

Johnson played quarterback at Texas A&M, going undrafted in 2011. He bounced around NFL rosters and played in lesser leagues for six years before getting into coaching in 2017. Prior to joining the Vikings, he was an offensive quality control coach with the Colts for two seasons.

DeMeco Ryans is putting together a nice offensive staff in Houston. Former 49ers passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik is the OC, with Johnson as QBs coach and former Vikings OC Klint Kubiak as the run game coordinator.

The Vikings' quarterbacks coach is Chris O'Hara, who came with O'Connell from the Rams last year. We'll see who Minnesota tabs to replace Johnson.

It'll also be interesting to see if any other changes are made to the Vikings' coaching staff. It doesn't appear that they're losing Keenan McCardell or Brian Angelichio — both of whom got OC buzz earlier this year — so the defensive side of the ball is likely the one to watch. Will Brian Flores want to bring in any of his guys? Josh Boyer is the most obvious name to keep in mind.
