The Vikings have officially placed veteran linebacker Jordan Hicks on injured reserve, they announced on Tuesday. He was hospitalized on Sunday after taking a blow to his shin during the game against the Saints and developing compartment syndrome. Hicks underwent a successful procedure to alleviate the pressure buildup in his leg and reduce swelling.

This move means Hicks will miss at least the next four games for the Vikings, who have seven games left in their regular season. He'll be out against the Broncos, Bears, Raiders, and Bengals. The earliest he'll be eligible to return is Week 16 against the Lions, but it's currently unclear if that's a realistic timeline.

The Vikings also officially announced the signing of veteran LB Anthony Barr to their practice squad. Barr, who was with the Vikings for the entire Mike Zimmer era (2014-21), was back in the team's facility on Tuesday. Depending on how quickly he can get up to speed, it's not out of the question that he could be elevated to play in Denver this weekend. Barr has been out of football since spending last season with the Cowboys.

For the time being, Hicks' absence figures to lead to a near every-down role for rookie Ivan Pace Jr., who is expected to wear the green dot and communicate the defensive calls to his teammates. Other players who could see the field at linebacker this weekend include Troy Dye, Nick Vigil, Brian Asamoah II, and Barr.

The team announced that Hicks was released from the hospital on Tuesday.
