Vikings Tied For 17th-Best Opening Odds to Win Super Bowl LVIII in 2024

In this story:
With the 2022-23 NFL season concluding on Sunday, it's officially the offseason for all 32 teams — which means looking ahead to next fall and beyond.
Can the Minnesota Vikings take the leap to Super Bowl contention in year two under Kevin O'Connell? They're coming off a 13-win season and have some of the requisite pieces to improve next season, but the books are clearly expecting regression. The Vikings are tied for the 17th-best opening odds to win Super Bowl LVIII next year at +4000, according to SI Sportsbook. Another way to look at it is that they're tied for the 12th-worst odds to take home the Lombardi Trophy in a year's time.

The Vikings were one of just five teams, including the Super Bowl champion Chiefs and runner-up Eagles, to win at least 13 regular season games in 2022. But among those five teams, their point differential was a major outlier. The Chiefs (+127), the Eagles (+133), the Bills (+169), and the 49ers (+173) all had point differentials well above 100. The Vikings' was -3. They went 11-0 in one-score games and were blown out three times.
Minnesota's thrilling wins masked some of its flaws for much of the season, but those were exposed in a big way during the wild card round loss to the Giants. As such, it's not surprising that sportsbooks aren't high on the Vikings' ceiling in 2023.
This will be a fascinating offseason for O'Connell's team. Brian Flores was hired as defensive coordinator and will be tasked with turning around an awful unit that was the team's primary downfall this past season. Offensively, Justin Jefferson is eligible for an extension and Kirk Cousins is going into the final year of his current contract. Across the board, the Vikings have decisions to make on expensive, aging veterans like Adam Thielen, Harrison Smith, Dalvin Cook, and Eric Kendricks.
Is the roster good enough to warrant running it back in 2023? Cousins, Jefferson, T.J. Hockenson, Christian Darrisaw, and Brian O'Neill make up a strong core on offense. If Cousins can continue to master O'Connell's offense in year two of their partnership, a unit that finished seventh in yards and eighth in points could be even better — especially with improved guard play and more explosiveness at wide receiver.
Pair that offense with what could be a much better defense under Flores and you can talk yourselves into the Vikings being better in 2023 than they were in 2022, even if they might win fewer games due to inevitable regression in one-score contests.
Then again, that's the optimistic view. This roster has a lot of question marks on the defensive side of the ball and the interior of the offensive line, and the Vikings don't have a ton of resources to address those. At the moment, they're towards the bottom of the league in cap space and have just five draft picks.
When it comes to Super Bowl odds for next season, the Vikings being right in the middle of the pack feels reasonable. Let's check back in a few months and see what things look like after the heart of the offseason.
