It was reported earlier this week that Varitek would announce his retirement late this week. He is expected to stay with the organization in some capacity.

The Red Sox had offered Varitek a minor league contract and an invitation to big-league camp, but Varitek, who turns 40 in April, opted to retire rather than take a reduced role in Boston. The Red Sox already have three catchers in Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Kelly Shoppach and Ryan Lavarnway.

Over the course of his 15-year-career Varitek was named to three All-Star teams. In 1546 games, all played in a Red Sox uniform, he hit .256/.341/.435 with 193 home runs and 757 RBI.
