ESPN apologizes for Brent Musburger's Katherine Webb comments

The great amount of attention ESPN cameras and Brent Musburger paid to A.J. McCarron's girlfriend, Katherine Webb, created amusement and some criticism during the BCS championship game Monday night.

Faced with the challenge of keeping a national audience interested in Alabama's early domination and 35-0 lead, Musburger used lingering shots of Webb and McCarron's mom to urge kids to become quarterbacks if they wanted to attract beauties like the 2012 Miss Alabama.

“You quarterbacks, you get all the good looking women,” Brent Musburger remarked after the cameras showed Webb rooting in the stands alongside McCarron’s mother. “What a beautiful woman.” After finding consensus with co-host Kirk Herbstreit, Musburger also added, “If you’re a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with pop.”

Webb told TMZ.com that she was "flattered" and "slightly embarrassed" by the "funniest thing ever," but on Tuesday afternoon, ESPN felt the need to apologize.

ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said of Musburger: “We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current  Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.”

Webb, whose Twitter followers increased from a few thousand to more than 125,000 during the broadcast, even attracted an invitation -- perhaps intended for direct message -- from Arizona Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett, who urged her to join him for wings and a visit to a gentleman's club after the game. McCarron lightheartedly replied to Dockett's efforts to pick up his girlfriend.
