The Philadelphia Phillies placed first baseman Ryan Howard on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a left knee inflammation and have not ruled out knee surgery.

Howard will have an MRI on Sunday or Monday to determine whether surgery will be necessary. Knee surgery would likely end the first baseman's season, and GM Ruben Amaro said the team will be "conservative" in handling Howard's injury.

Howard was initially placed on the disabled list after experiencing knee discomfort while fielding grounders. On Friday, Howard launched a long solo home run in a win against the Braves.

Laynce Nix started at first base in place of Howard on Saturday.
