Tony Clark appointed executive director of MLBPA

Former Major League first baseman Tony Clark was unanimously voted in as the new executive director of the Major League Baseball Players' Association, the MLBPA announced Tuesday.

Clark replaces Michael Weiner, who died two weeks ago from brain cancer and is the first former player to hold the position.

Clark joined the MLBPA staff in March 2010 and was promoted to deputy executive director last July. He played 15 seasons with six teams finishing with 251 career home runs  before retiring in 2009.

"Tony has some big shoes to fill, but we're more than confident that he has the knowledge, experience and passion to serve as our next executive director," said free agent outfielder and MLBPA representative Curtis Granderson. "Tony has been actively involved in the last three rounds of bargaining, and his commitment to the brotherhood of players -- past, present and future -- makes him uniquely qualified to serve in this role."
