Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino latest to sue NFL over concussions

Last week, Hall of Fame member and former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino sued the NFL over concussions, the LA Times is reporting.

According to federal court records, Marino and 14 other former players sued in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia.

They now join at least 5,000 former players, including 41 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, or their estates that have also sued the NFL, alleging the NFL concealed and misled players about football-related brain injuries.

These are the same arguments being made in more than 300 lawsuits related to football concussions and the NFL.

Federal judge Anita B. Brody rejected the proposed $765 million settlement in January, concerned about whether the settlement amount is sufficient for all affected players.

The lawsuit did not go into the specific symptoms each player has, but instead used general terms:

“On information and belief, the Plaintiff … sustained repetitive, traumatic sub-concussive and/or concussive head impacts during NFL games and/or practices...

We continue to work at the direction of the Court and Special Master as they review the settlement agreement and rightfully ensure that all members of the class are protected,” Sol Weiss and Chris Seeger, the other co-lead counsel, said in a statement. “We look forward to finalizing this agreement so that former players can soon begin taking advantage of its benefits.”

Marino retired in 1999 after playing 17 seasons for the Miami Dolphins.
