Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto said he wants to try to return this season after dealing with a quadriceps injury for the past two months.

Votto has not played since July 5. He also missed 23 games earlier this season with a strained muscle above his left knee.

The Reds are all but out of the playoff race, as they begin the week 12 games out of first place in the National League Central with 12 games remaining in the regular season.

"Getting in there, it's the first time I'll get to work in the cage with [hitting coaches] Don Long and Lee Tinsley. That's the final step before taking batting practice on the field," Votto said, according to MLB.com. “I definitely feel like I've made tremendous progress.”

Votto, a former National League MVP, has only played 62 games this season and has six home runs and 23 RBI.
