Diamondbacks DFA Madison Bumgarner After Rough Start to Season, per Report
A day after he gave up seven runs in just three innings against the Cardinals, the Diamondbacks have designated pitcher Madison Bumgarner for assignment, according to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.
Arizona made the decision while Bumgarner is still under contract through the 2024 season, and with over $34 million remaining on his deal. Any team that decides to sign him would owe Bumgarner the league minimum of $720,000. Through four starts this season, the left-hander is 0–3 with a 10.26 ERA.
Bumgarner, 33, signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Diamondbacks ahead of the 2020 campaign. He’s posted a 15–32 record with a 5.23 ERA over 69 games during that span, falling well short of the standard he set during his tenure in San Francisco.
As a member of the Giants, Bumgarner developed into an ace for the franchise during their three World Series titles in the early 2010s. A four-time All-Star, he was the MVP of the 2014 World Series, and posted a 3.13 ERA over 11 seasons with the team.
