Dodgers Trade Noah Syndergaard to Guardians for Amed Rosario
With less than a week to go before MLB’s trade deadline, the Dodgers and Guardians have decided there’s no time like the present.
Los Angeles is acquiring shortstop Amed Rosario in exchange for starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard, the teams announced on Wednesday. The move was first reported by Inside the Mets‘s Pat Ragazzo. The Dodgers are also sending cash to Cleveland as part of the deal.
The move addresses areas of need for both clubs. The Dodgers have been in need of quality infielders all year following the season-ending injury to Gavin Lux during spring training. Los Angeles already added depth by acquiring veteran utility player Kiké Hernández from the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Cleveland, meanwhile, will be without former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber will be out until at least mid-September with a right elbow injury.
Syndergaard, who turns 31 in August, joined the Dodgers on a one-year, $13 million deal this offseason after spending last year with the Angels and Phillies. He’s struggled, posting a 1–4 record with a 7.16 ERA over 12 starts. He’s struck out a career-low 6.18 batters per nine innings, and has been in the injured list since June 8 with a blister.
Rosario, 27, had posted back-to-back strong seasons in 2021 and ’22 but has regressed this year. Through 94 games, he’s batting .265/.306/.369 with three home runs and nine stolen bases. Both players are set to become free agents this winter.
