Astros Star Jose Altuve Signs Contract Extension That Makes Him ‘Astro for Life’
José Altuve and Houston Astros are in agreement on a five-year contract extension that will likely keep the second baseman with the franchise for the rest of his playing days.
The Astros announced the extension on Tuesday, posting on social media that Altuve had signed on to be “an Astro for life.”
Altuve’s new five-year deal will pay him a total of $125 million, and the contract is reportedly set to get underway after the 2024 MLB season, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Altuve is due to make $30 million per year from 2025 to ’27, and $10 million annually in ‘28 and ‘29, in addition to a signing bonus of $15 million.
The veteran second baseman will turn 34 this coming season, having spent his entire 13-year career in Houston. Altuve, the 2017 AL MVP, two-time World Series champion and eight-time All-Star, is one of the greatest players in Astros franchise history.
Last season, Altuve played in 90 games and logged a .915 OPS with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs. He now figures to play a prominent role in their setup for at least the next half decade, or until he decides to call it a career.
