Chargers CB Verrett out for season with torn ACL

SAN DIEGO (AP) The San Diego Chargers have lost cornerback Jason Verrett to a season-ending knee injury even as it appears that rookie defensive end Joey Bosa is finally ready to make his NFL debut.

Verrett confirmed Wednesday that he has a torn ACL in his left knee that will require surgery.

''My season is done with,'' he said.

Verrett, who was a Pro Bowler last year in his second NFL season, said he felt pain the past three games and had an MRI on Monday that revealed the injury.

''I was shocked with the news and now I've just got to move forward with it,'' he said.

It's the latest big injury for the Chargers (1 -3), who have blown late leads in their three losses. They've already lost wide receiver Keenan Allen and running back Danny Woodhead to torn ACLs, and inside linebacker Manti Te'o to an Achilles injury.

''It's devastating to have to go through that but man, it's still early in the year,'' Verrett said. ''We've still got a lot of good guys that will be on the field. Shoot, I'm rooting for them.''

Bosa, meanwhile, was a full participant at practice for the first time and said he hopes to make his NFL debut Sunday at Oakland.

Bosa, the No. 3 pick overall in this year's draft, missed all of training camp during a nasty holdout and then hurt a hamstring.

''I kind of came back on an easy day, no pads, but feeling great and ready to go this week,'' Bosa said. ''It's the coach's decision. I'm hopeful, obviously. I want to get out there. I want to play. It's still kind of one day at a time, but I feel great and ready to go.''

The former Ohio State star hasn't played since the Fiesta Bowl, when he was ejected in the first quarter for targeting after leading with his helmet on a hit to Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer.

''I definitely feel ready,'' he said. I've been busting my butt the last two weeks, or more, once I really got able to start working and running to really get in shape and get out there and play. It's been a long process. It's been tough, but I'm just excited to finally be out there.''

Bosa said it didn't matter who the opponent is for his debut.

''I haven't taken one snap in the NFL so I'm just looking to get one and then keep going with that,'' he said. ''Of course it's a huge game, division rivals. They're playing really well right now. I've been looking forward to this for a long time.''

Bosa said this is the first time he's missed games because of injury since youth football in Florida.

''It's been a new experience for me, standing on the sideline watching my team play. It's been tough, but I'm just ready to get going.''
