Raiders Release QB Brian Hoyer After One Season, per Report
As they move to reshape their quarterback room, the Las Vegas Raiders appear set to bid a veteran farewell.
The Raiders are releasing quarterback Brian Hoyer, according to a Friday morning report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Hoyer, 38, made one start and threw two interceptions and no touchdowns in three games for Las Vegas last season.
One of football’s most well-traveled quarterbacks, Hoyer has seen game action for eight different teams since leaving Michigan State after the 2008 season.
The New England Patriots signed Hoyer to back up quarterback Tom Brady in 2009, and he spent three years with the team. His two most notable tours came with the Cleveland Browns from 2013 to ’14—his hometown team, for whom he went 10–6 as a starter—and the Houston Texans in 2015.
With the Texans, Hoyer threw 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions for a team that went 9–7 and won the AFC South.
Returning to the Patriots in the late 2010s, Hoyer won Super Bowl LIII as Brady’s backup once again in the 2018 NFL season.
Hoyer is the first veteran quarterback cut by the Raiders this offseason; it is widely believed Jimmy Garoppolo will follow him.
