Celtics star Isaiah Thomas surprised a kid shooting hoops by himself

Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas spotted a kid shooting hoops alone in a park and decided to join him.

Tuesday was a pretty normal day for 14-year-old Robbie McNulty. And then an NBA All-Star showed up.

Robbie was shooting hoops by himself at a park near his house outside Boston when he saw a guy approaching the court. As he got closer, he realized it was Celtics All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas.

The Boston Globe has the whole story.

Thomas had just attended a back-to-school event nearby with his wife, Kayla. As they walked by the park, he told his wife he wanted to join in a pickup softball game he saw going on. She thought it was a bad idea, so he went to the basketball court instead.

“He was the only kid there,” Thomas told the Globe. “So I’m like, ‘I’m just going to go get some shots up with him.’ When I walked over, he rebounded his own shot and turned around and I’m like, ‘Can I get a couple shots?’ And he stopped. He didn’t even say a word, like his eyes were so big. He just stopped and froze and I’m like, ‘Pass me the ball.’”

Robbie was just as shocked as you’d expect.

“I was kind of just like dribbling with my mouth open and looking at him, maybe waiting for him to say something,” he told the Globe. “He was like, ‘Can I shoot with you?’ And I’m thinking, ‘Can I shoot with you? Is this actually Isaiah Thomas?’ ”

The two shot around for a few minutes and Thomas took a selfie before he left.

Thomas also left a comment under Robbie’s Instagram post: “Nice rebounding for u.”

After Thomas left, Robbie sent his mom a text.

“Mom, you’re not even going to believe this,” it said. “The best thing ever just happened to me.”
