Nation’s No. 1 2027 Recruit Jalen Brewster Is Transferring to Defending Champion Buford

If you're Buford, there's a very specific way to replace seven Division I defensive recruits. You win by 20 on national television, and then you add one of America's best high school football players.

Five-star defensive lineman Jalen Brewster announced Saturday night that he is transferring from Cedar Hill High School in Texas to the Buford Wolves in Georgia for his senior season. The move gives the defending Class 6A state and national champions another substantial piece for their title defense. Rivals ranks Brewster as the No. 1 overall player in the Class of 2027, while 247Sports has him No. 4 nationally.

Just hours before Brewster's announcement, Buford had beaten another in-state powerhouse, Gainesville, 39-19 on ESPN2 with a defensive front that Buford coach Bryant Appling admitted isn't built like last year's team. The Wolves graduated their top seven tacklers from a defense that helped carry them to a 15-0 season, and four freshmen saw time on the defensive line Saturday.

“We’re smaller than we were last year, not as highly talented as we were last year,” Appling said after the win, explaining this was a message his players had heard throughout the offseason. To be fair, for their first outing, the revamped line held its own, holding Gainesville to only two field goals in the first half.

But, apparently, somebody ordered reinforcements.

Brewster is approximately 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds and is considered one of the premier interior defensive linemen in the country. He committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders last October and remains the centerpiece of their 2027 recruiting class.

Brewster isn't just a big guy whose job is to make running backs reconsider running through the hole or trying to bounce it to the sideline for a hydration break. Cedar Hill also used Brewster on the offensive side of the ball. As a junior, he rushed for 151 yards on 19 carries with four touchdowns.

Buford Gets a 300-Pound Reinforcement

Brewster said the move was about “what was best for my future,” and that the transfer will allow him to graduate in December while remaining on track academically and athletically.

When he'll first suit up for Buford remains to be seen. The Wolves are off next week, which gives him time to acclimate not only to a new team but also to the area before traveling to North Carolina to play Mallard Creek on Sept. 4. Reports say Brewster could be eligible by then.

When Brewster actually takes the field will sort itself out soon enough. The larger point already has. Buford opened its title defense with a 20-point win despite replacing seven Division I defenders. Now one of the nation's premier defensive linemen is on his way to Georgia.

The defending national champions were already rich. They just got richer.
