Four Takeaways From Week 0 Of The Iowa High School Football Season

Thrilling comeback, big-time offensive numbers highlight the start of the Iowa high school football season.

While not officially here, the Iowa high school football season kicked off this past Thursday and Friday with Week 0 games.

Most of the contests that took place came about due to openings in the planned schedules after eight schools cancelled their seasons.

But regardless, it meant live football mixed in with scrimmages around the state.

Tanner Ray, Creston Rally Past Mack Murdock, Centerville

In Centerville, fans were treated to a thriller, as Creston rallied to stun Centerville, 52-42.

The Big Reds took an early 22-0 lead on the heels of a monster showing from star quarterback Mack Murdock. The Panthers, through, rallied, scoring 24 points in the second to cut the deficit down to four at the break.

A pair of third quarter touchdowns gave Creston the lead, as they held off a 20-point fourth from Centerville for the victory.

Tanner Ray had himself a night, completing 17 of 27 for 230 yards with three touchdowns, adding 114 yards and a score on the ground. Gabe Kaufman, a sophomore, complimented him with 20 carriesf or 97 yards, as Jace Purdum caught eight passes for 159 and a TD.

Rhett Driskell had two touchdowns on his three receptions, with Ryder Sharp adding a touchdown. Davin Wallace had a 95-yard pick-six for the Creston defense while Kaufman had an 88-yard kickoff return for the special teams.

For Centerville, Murdock was 36-for-56, piling up 490 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for a fifth. Abram Decena had 270 yards receiving and three TDs on 16 receptions, as Sloan Phillips caught 10 passes for 121 and a TD.

Nolan Kriegel, Iowa Valley Serve Notice

If you have not heard about Nolan Kriegel yet, you have now, as the Iowa Valley senior added six more touchdowns to his career total in a 67-14 victory over Springville.

Kriegel rushed 10 times for 232 yards, scoring five touchdowns while completing 5 of 6 for 57 yards and another score. Layne Peska caught a touchdown while Immanuel Pritchard, Chance Hoyt and Dane Smith each had a rushing score.

Mason Hoyt had five tackles for loss and a sack among his 11 stops, with Peska returning an interception 80 yards for a score.

Kingsley-Pierson, Coon Rapids-Bayard Combine For 108 Points

Despite not scoring in the first quarter, Kingsley-Pierson found a way to put 56 points on the board, including 32 in the second quarter.

The Panthers bested Coon Rapids-Bayard, 56-52, as the two scored 38 points in the fourth.

Caden Oswald had four total touchdowns, rushing 11 times for 113 yards with three TDs while catching three passes for 63 and a score. He also had 12 tackles and an interception on defense.

Camden Cunningham Does It All For Colfax-Mingo

Junior Camden Cunningham found the end zone three different ways in a 32-0 victory for Colfax-Mingo over Saydel.

Cunningham had a passing TD, ran in two scores and had an interception return for another. He threw for 86 yards and ran for 53, finishing with seven tackles on defense including two for loss.

On special teams, he averaged almost 41 yards per punt.

The win was the first for new head coach Jacob Lietz.
