Nevada High School Football Top 25: Bishop Gorman Holds No. 1 After St. John Bosco Win

Tough schedules are taking their toll on some traditional power high school football teams in Nevada. There's obviously still plenty of time to turn things around. Although Bishop Gorman's stranglehold on No. 1 isn't going to loosen any time soon, the battle behind them should produce weekly drama.

1. Bishop Gorman (2-0)

Last week: def. St. John Bosco 38-28

Next up: at Columbus (Fla.)

The spin: It's hard for us to envision any team anywhere posting a bigger a statement win this season than what the Gaels did Friday against St. John Bosco. Sure, there are big showcase games still to come but Bishop Gorman is going to be decided favorites in all of them. If the Gaels pass their test in Miami this week, it's hard to see them relinquishing what will likely be a consensus No. 1 ranking.

2. Churchill County (2-0)

Last week: def. Reed 15-14

Next up: at South Tahoe

The spin: Two wins over upper-division teams by a combined three points. The Greenwave should find things much easier back in their own element this week, but you have to wonder what toll two straight grinders have taken. Still, a serious point has been made.

3. Spanish Springs (1-0)

Last week: def. Carson 35-7

Next up: vs. Foothill

The spin: A much bigger test awaits this week against a capable Foothill team. With Bishop Manogue's early struggles, the Cougars are looking once again like the upper division Northern power. We'll see what's really under the hood this week.

4. Arbor View (0-2)

Last week: lost vs. Carlsbad 24-17

Up next: Bye

The spin: Two straight road trips have seen a talented Arbor View offense post just 31 points through eight quarters. The defense has been solid, however. This team should get things figured out offensively. The bye week certainly helps.

5. Liberty (0-1)

Last week: Bye

Up next: Bye

The spin: The unsuccessful Hawaii trip followed by two straight bye weeks is a bizarre way to start a season. Hopefully, the Patriots are putting the downtime to good use.

6. Sloan Canyon (1-0)

Last week: def. McQueen 28-21

Up next: vs. Muir

The spin: That win had to feel good for the Pirates. Avenging a state championship game loss against a quality foe like McQueen makes us feel like Sloan Canyon is ready to take another big step forward as a program. But it's actually games like this week's against Southern California invader Muir that will be the true barometer. The Mustangs have QB issues after their starter was not cleared to play by California's governing body. Regardless, this will be one of the most talented teams the Pirates face this season.

7. Mater East (1-0)

Last week: Bye

Up next: vs. Victor Valley

The spin: Not sure the bye week helped since there was some serious energy produced by the Faith Lutheran win. Now, Mater East had to sit around waiting for another chance to put the buzz on display. Victor Valley posted a solid win over fellow Southern California entity West Covina, which is a bit more limited offensively than the Knights. This looks like a serious test.

8. Centennial (1-1)

Last week: lost vs. Cathedral (Ca.) 52-49

Up next: vs. Burbank

9. Foothill (1-0)

Last week: def. Basic 42-8

Up next: at Spanish Springs

The spin: The Falcons took care of business and did what was expected last week. Spanish Springs is going to be a serious test that will tell us a lot about programs this week. Foothill quarterback Ryder Dobbs, this is your moment.

10. Palo Verde (2-0)

Last week: def. Legacy 28-26

Up next: vs. Desert Oasis

The spin: It appears this program has turned the corner after some tough-luck losses last season. Desert Oasis should be a solid challenge, but not one Palo Verde can't overcome if things are really going to be different this season compared to last year's 3-7 mark. The offense has looked solid so far and has another chance to do some serious damage on Friday.
