Top 2022 marks in Washington high school boys track and field: Dash Sirmon on top of nation in javelin
Dash Sirmon had already won the meet.
Sirmon’s 205-11 mark on his third javelin throw in the Oregon Relays at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. — the meet his coach referred to just as “the big one” — secured the win for the Walla Walla senior.
Before his final throw, the pole vaulters and triple-jumpers urged the crowd to start cheering. And Sirmon delivered, uncorking a 213-1 3/4 heave, the top mark in the country this spring.
It's nearly four feet ahead of the second best mark, 209-5, set by Samuel Jennings of Pendleton High School in Oregon.
“It came off hot,” Hisaw said. “It was a big-time throw. The flight was really, really true. He was super excited, it was really cool to see.”
As the Hayward Field may set a big stage, Hisaw says Sirmon has always been a “big meet thrower.”
It was in many ways a career achievement long in the making for Sirmon, who signed with Washington’s track team on full scholarship.
He watched his older sister, Maddie Sirmon, win two state titles at Wa-Hi, as well as his older brother Peter Sirmon, who holds school records in the 1,500, 3,000 and the pole vault.
He finished sixth at the WIAA state track meet in the javelin as a freshman.
That summer, he won the U16 summer USTA national championship.
State championships were not held his sophomore and junior seasons due to COVID-19, though he was a three-time all-Mid-Columbia Conference selection as a junior. Last summer, he broke the school record with 206 feet, eight inches.
Now, he’s the overwhelming favorite to wins his first WIAA state title.
“He’s been to a lot of big meets, he’s seen the environment and he’s not in awe of it,” Hisaw said. “But he’s a really composed, calm-demeanored kid who loves the javelin and he’s a really competitive young man so he gets in those moments and just thrives.”
