Two minor leaguers suspended for violating drug program
NEW YORK (AP) Minor leaguers Xavier Turner of the Texas Rangers and Cam Williams of the Los Angeles Angels have been suspended for violating baseball's minor league drug program.
Turner, an outfielder with Class A Hickory, has been suspended for 50 games for a second positive test for a drug of abuse. Williams, an outfielder with the rookie-level Angels in the Arizona League, has received a 56-game penalty for testing positive for a metabolite of Nandrolone, a performance-enhancing substance.
A 19th-round draft pick from Vanderbilt last year, the 23-year-old Turner hit .325 with four homers and 18 RBIs in 34 games this year for Hickory and Class A Spokane. Williams, 19, was a 25th-round selection this year from Howard and batted .235 with 10 RBIs in rookie level games.
Major League Baseball announced the suspensions on Friday. There have been 82 suspensions this year under the minor league drug program and 13 under the major league program.
