Angels News: Reid Detmers Feeling Relieved After Dominant, Near No-Hitter Against Rangers

In this story:
Reid Detmers became the youngest pitcher to throw a no-hitter in 2022 when he pitched a no-no against the Tampa Bay Rays. Wednesday night, he flirted with another no-hit performance but ultimately gave one up after 7.1 innings.
Detmers didn't mind allowing a hit too much. After all, he had allowed an average of over 5.5 hits per game over his last seven starts before Tuesday night.
Holding a 10.30 ERA across his last six starts, Detmers was clearly in a slump after a hot June. For Detmers, his solid performance Tuesday night has breathed some confidence into the 24-year-old.
"Obviously, the last couple weeks have been a grind," said Detmers. "Very stressful, but just kind of put my head down and kept working. Obviously, going out there today and accomplishing what I did, I can take a breath now. It's something that I have worked on for the last couple of weeks. And pretty much everything kind of came together. Finally. It feels good."

Detmers told reporters that he had been working with pitching coach Matt Wise to break down the issues he was having on the mound. They found that Detmers needed to stand "taller" in his delivery to get on top of the ball. The results, Detmers said, were immediate.
"In the last three or four days since my last start, I've felt 10 times better," Detmers said.

Nevin admitted he was nervous about leaving Detmers in, not necessarily because of his recent spotty history, but because the Angels' lead was so shallow. The Angels led 1-0 for almost the entirety of the game before Matt Thaiss homered in the ninth inning. However, he never intended to take Detmers out until he gave up a hit.
"I'm not going to take that opportunity away from somebody," Nevin said. "That's history ... I don't know how many have thrown two (no-hitters) in their careers. I can't imagine many before they're 24. And I think usually those guys got a plaque somewhere."

Detmers is scheduled to make his next appearance in Cincinnati against the Reds next Tuesday.
