The Toronto Blue Jays bullpen shuffle continues.

Toronto promoted top 30 prospect Nick Allgeyer, the team announced Saturday

Allgeyer is a left-handed pitcher drafted by the Blue Jays in 2018. The 6'3" starter features a fastball, changeup, and slider that he has developed in 40 career minor league appearances.

"Nick overcame Tommy John surgery and has had to fight for everything he has gotten," Allgeyer's college coach Rick Heller said in a release. "The amount of work he has put in is impressive and has really paid off.”

At just 25-years-old, Allgeyer's MLB.com ETA was listed as 2023, but a strong start to 2020 and a ravaged MLB bullpen expedited his timeline. Like several Toronto prospects, he skipped multiple minor league levels and began this season in Triple-A.

In 2020, Allgeyer's velocity ticked up into the mid-90s and he has shown above-average control at all levels. In two starts this year, he has allowed just two runs, striking out 10 in 12 total innings.

Allgeyer will take the 26-man roster spot of fellow lefty Ryan Borucki, who was placed on the Injured List Friday with a left forearm flexor strain. Borucki became the twelfth Blue Jay reliever placed on the IL, but Toronto's pen continues to produce one of the best ERAs in baseball.

"We keep losing guys, but people gotta step up," Manager Charlie Montoyo said. "And that's what players have done."

With Anthony Kay starting Saturday's game and four Toronto relievers burned in Friday's loss, Allgeyer was one of Toronto's few stretched out options to fill bulk innings if needed.

Reliever David Phelps was transferred to the 60-Day IL in a corresponding move to open up a 40-man roster spot. Phelps has been out nine days with a "significant lat strain," per Montoyo.
