The Braves are mixing things up a bit at the bottom of the lineup, giving Eddie Rosario the day off with a lefty on the mound. Marcell Ozuna gets another chance to try and prove he can contribute in the DH spot, while Kevin Pillar goes to left field and Eli White replaces Sam Hilliard in center field.
Starting for the Atlanta Braves today is Bryce Elder. The 2020 5th rounder out of the University of Texas is making his 3rd start of the year for the Braves after being called up from Gwinnett to fill-in for an injured Max Fried. He's 1-0 on the year with an ERA of 0.00 - he's allowed eight hits but no runs in his first two starts of the season, against Cincinnati and St. Louis. Elder has walked four batters and struck out thirteen. For his career, he's 3-4 in Atlanta with a 2.58 ERA in twelve appearances (eleven starts), with sixty strikeouts and one complete game shutout (on September 26th, 2022, against the Washington Nationals)
Opposing Elder is RHP Kris Bubic. 0-1 on the year with a 1.64 ERA, he's never faced the Braves in his career. A member of Kansas City's pitcher-heavy 2018 draft, he's not had tremendous success at the major level, posting a 10-27 record and a 4.78 ERA since being called up in 2020. He looks to be a different pitcher this season, though, giving up only two runs combined in his first two starts of the year with only one walk to thirteen strikeouts. There's lots of factors that could explain the success this season - he's lowered his release point, increased velocity on all of his pitches, improved the shape of his changeup, and added a new slider. The lefty now has better weapons to combat left-handed hitters, and he's shown a propensity to throw the slider in two-strike counts.
