Chicago Cubs Have Exciting New Trade Chip to Dangle at Deadline

The Chicago Cubs have a new player that could be at the top of opposing teams' wish lists at the MLB trade deadline.

The Chicago Cubs have played themselves into potentially becoming buyers at this season's Aug. 1 MLB trade deadline. At the very least, they appear poised to no longer be sellers as the front office announced they will not be entertaining offers on Cody Bellinger.

Perhaps they do absolutely nothing a the trade deadline, something that seemed so outlandish just a few weeks a go is now a real possibility. But if they do decide to add, one name to look out for is Kevin Alcántara.

According to MLB.com, Alcántara is the Cubs' top trade chip at the deadline.

"With Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki locked in long-term and No. 1 prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong racing toward the Majors, Alcántara, a 21-year-old the Cubs received from the Yankees in the 2021 Anthony Rizzo deal, could be used to add to the roster for the stretch run. Alcántara, a tall, athletic center fielder with power potential who profiles as a five-tool player, ranks No. 4 on the Cubs prospect list and No. 97 in MLB Pipeline’s overall Top 100," writes Mark Feinsand.

Alcántara is the type of player than be moved for a franchise-altering piece such as another starting pitcher like Detroit Tigers ace Eduardo Rodriguez or White Sox hurler Dylan Cease.

If Chicago does decide to buy, expect Alcántara's to be the first name mentioned in trade discussions.
