The Chicago Cubs (6-4) must like playing under the lights at Wrigley Field as they are now 2-0 on the season after defeating the Seattle Mariners (4-8) on Tuesday night 14-9.

The Cubs are now two games over .500 after taking the series from a formidable Mariners squad. It's an encouraging sign as they have now won both of their previous series and are once again in line for the sweep on Wednesday.

Tuesday's slugfest featured a Nelson Velasquez grand slam in the third inning, an incredible feat as he was just called up from Triple-A Iowa. Trey Mancini had one as well in the first inning, a two-run shot to get the scoring started.

Equally impressive, Dansby Swanson continues to be the best shortstop in the National League during the early goings as he recorded a 4-for-4 night at the plate with two RBI.

Nico Hoerner, Cody Bellinger, and Yan Gomes joined Swanson, Mancini, and Velazquez with multi-hit nights.

It was an offensive outpouring.

But with any slugfest between two teams there is pitching casualties. Hayden Wesneski recorded just four outs on the evening while giving up seven runs, five earned. Wesneski had an incredible spring and seemed destined for great success this season, but he may find himself relegated to the bullpen or even demoted to Triple-A after this lackluster performance.

In what quickly became a bullpen game, the Cubs allowed just two more runs after Wesneski's exit. The offense did a great job in keeping the team in the game after a disastrous start on the mound and the bullpen did their job in helping keep it close.

Overall, disappointing start for Wesneski but an excellent team win for the Cubs who are overperforming this season. Just as we all expected.

Chicago will go for the sweep on Wednesday afternoon as Marcus Stroman takes the mound for a 1:20 p.m. CT start. Stroman hasn't allowed a single run this season in 12 innings pitched.
