It's more than well known at this point by people who even have a passive knowledge of baseball that Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts is one of the best players in the sport -- one who will, in all likelihood, be enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame one day.

But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gave Betts quite the comparison, one that may seem too lofty on the surface, even for a player as talented as him.

“I think the only comp is Ohtani, and what he does is incomparable."

For as incredible a player as Betts is, comparing him to Shohei Ohtani -- the Angels' two-way superstar the likes of which the sport has never seen before -- may seem to be a bit of a stretch.

That said, Betts has showed off his defensive versatility this season, as he's played multiple infield positions when his team's needed that in addition to his usual RF duties, a factor that Roberts included in his rationale.

“But I think if you’re talking about somebody who’s doing something that’s very unique, at a high level, it’s just very rare. You can plug him in at shortstop or second base, and the offensive production is superstar production. Mookie’s willingness, eagerness, to do whatever is asked of him is pretty incredible.”

When looking at it that way, the Betts-Ohtani comparison may not be that far off.

No, he doesn't pitch, but his offensive production of late has thrusted him into the NL MVP conversation. Over his last 15 games, he's hit an incredible .365 with nine home runs and 19 RBI to go along with a .471 on-base percentage and 1.038 OPS.

The fact that he's hitting .276 with 26 homers and 62 RBI over his first half is confirmation that Betts' production isn't just the result of a torrid couple weeks either. He can hit well on a consistent basis, all while playing Gold Glove caliber defense in right and proving to be more than capable of playing both middle infield spots on short notice as well.

Betts may not be exactly Ohtani -- and that's not a knock on him at all -- but he's still one of the most versatile and talented players in MLB.

That's not exactly an easy thing to do by any stretch, and him and his team will be a great show to watch when the Dodgers begin their second half of the season starting on Friday.
