Logan Webb and the SF Giants have agreed to a five-year, $90 million contract extension, per a team press release. The deal will pay Webb $8 million in 2024, $12 million in 2025, $23 million in 2026, $23 million in 2027, and $24 million in 2028. While Webb was multiple seasons away from reaching free agency, the deal should keep the Giants ace, and clear young face of the franchise, in San Francisco for years to come. He was previously slated to become a free agent following the 2026 season. So, the extension effectively buys out two free-agent years.

Drafted by the Giants organization in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Rocklin High School, Webb forewent a commitment to Cal Poly to sign for a $600,000 signing bonus. Even though he struggled to stay on the field early in his pro career, dealing with injuries and a PED suspension, Webb steadily rose through the ranks of the organization.

Webb made his MLB debut during the 2019 season at 22 years old, throwing 39.2 innings. After struggling during his first two seasons, he broke out in 2021, pitching to the tune of a 3.03 ERA in 148.1 innings across 26 starts. Winning 11 starts and striking out 158 batters, the right-hander established himself as a key cog in the Giants starting rotation, looking like one of the best young pitchers in MLB by the end of the season.

He showed he could sustain that high level of performance in the 2022 season, putting up a 2.90 ERA in 192.1 innings across 32 starts. His 4.2 fWAR was 14th amongst all qualified starters, ranking in the top 15 for other prominent stats like innings pitched, ERA, and total batters faced.

He also finished tenth in National League Cy Young Award voting for the 2022 season. His effective sinker and changeup combo has helped him garner ground balls at an extremely high rate, boasting one of the highest GB%s amongst starting pitchers.

So far this season, Webb has made three starts. While his ERA is an inflated 4.76, he has recorded 22 strikeouts and just three walks across 17 innings pitched. He is scheduled to make his fourth start of the year on Sunday, in the series finale against the Detroit Tigers.

Given the Giants recent struggles as an organization, Webb’s free agency clock was likely going to lead to trade rumors swirling until the two sides agreed to an extension. By agreeing to a five-year, $90 million contract with the Northern California-native, the SF Giants have put their fans at ease (at least for the time being) and solidified Logan Webb’s status as the face of the team’s pitching staff going forward.
