Baltimore Orioles Reportedly Have Reached Out to Top Free Agent Reliever

The Baltimore Orioles could very well make one of the biggest splashes in free agency this winter.

According to a report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Orioles have indeed been in contact with the crown jewel of the free agent reliever class, Josh Hader's, camp.

That would be right in line with what general manager Mike Elias has been saying all winter - that Baltimore would be playing at the top of the pitching market.

It's an interesting development as Hader's market value according to Spotrac is near five-years and $88 million. However, that could easily surpass $100 million.

For a team that likes to keep payroll low, adding an elite and incredibly expensive relief pitcher, the most volatile position in baseball, would be a stark departure from how this franchise normally conducts business.

However, it would send a clear message to the fans and the league that 101 wins and a departure in the American League Divisional Series is not enough.

A World Series is the ultimate goal.

The only issue is, if the Orioles truly wish to go for it, they will need more than just Hader to help supplement the pitching rotation. Spending $85 to $100 million on one bullpen piece could prohibit Baltimore from pursuing more top-end pitching, especially in the rotation and on a player that can provide more meaningful innings.

Of course, one other avenue to add starting pitching is the trade market. That avenue would allow Baltimore to give up prospect capital and acquire a cheap, controllable starter.

Anything and everything is on the table for the Orioles who have little money committed and the best farm system in baseball.
