What the Baltimore Orioles ultimately decide to do this offseason seems like an unknown right now. Speculation about them actually spending money doesn't look like it will come true.

General manager, Mike Elias, has restated that they won't trade their star prospects just for a trade's sake.

One move they might actually consider if offered something good enough in return would be to trade Anthony Santander.

Their star outfielder has been a hot commodity at the deadline and during each of the last few offseasons. The Orioles have held onto him every time because of his performance at the plate and his role in the clubhouse.

But now, Santander is projected to have a salary of around $14 million, which would be the highest for a single player during Elias' tenure.

Everyone knows the cost-effective franchise is not in the business of spending money.

That's why Houston Astros reporter for Chron.com, Michael Shapiro, linked Baltimore and the Astros as potential trade partners in a deal involving Santander and young outfielder Jake Meyers.

It's an easy connection to make.

Santander would be a massive upgrade offensively for their lineup and the Orioles would shed salary.

But, Shapiro also notes that it likely won't get completed.

"He's also less likely to be dealt. Yes, the Orioles have a litany of upcoming hot prospects. But trading a middle-of-the-order bat for unproven players isn't the kind of business contenders think is worthwhile," he writes.

Meyers would bring great defense to Baltimore, but his offensive struggles would be difficult for that lineup full of young players to endure.

Ultimately, Santander will likely be back with the Orioles like he always is, despite the constant trade rumors. The only way he potentially gets moved is if they can land an elite pitcher under club control for multiple seasons.
