Former Padres First Baseman Launches Podcast, Media Company

Eric Hosmer made his retirement announcement while promoting his new media company on Wednesday morning — not a bad way to promote your new product.

The former San Diego Padres' first baseman was a World Series champion with the Kansas City Royals in 2015. He was a four-time Gold Glove winner, a one-time Silver Slugger, and and American League All-Star.

Hosmer was released from the Chicago Cubs in May and immediately began planning his post-playing career with his former Kansas City teammate Anthony Seratelli. He didn't feel like he had any playing days left in him.

"For me, I'm a first baseman and a left-handed hitter. There's not much value I can bring a team unless I'm playing 150-something games throughout the year and I'm at the point now where I just don't feel like I can do that."

Hosmer's announcements came via the debut episode of the Diggin' Deep Podcast, which will be hosted by Hosmer, former major league relief pitcher Peter Moylan, and Justin Su’a, a process and development coach based in Bradenton, Fla.

The goal for the company is to be baseball's version of Peyton Manning's Omaha Productions or LeBron James' SpringHill Entertainment.

Hosmer's stated goal isn't to break news or analyze trades; rather, he wants players to be able to open up and dig deep into their personal experiences.

During the episode, Hosmer and his co-hosts discussed producing longform content and distributing on Netflix to posting shorter episodes on social media.

"We want to be that ultimate Major League Baseball media-driven company and that's our goal."

After appearing in parts of 12 major league seasons with Atlanta, Los Angeles and Kansas City, Moylan joined the Braves' broadcast crew as an analyst. This is Hosmer's first broadcasting gig.
