The patch will serve as a lasting reminder of the heightened expectations Seidler instilled when he succeeded Ron Fowler as team chairman in 2020.
In 2023, the Padres boasted the third-highest payroll in Major League Baseball, an outlay previously unheard of in the 28th-largest media market in the United States.
Seidler died at the age of 63 in November. With news of his death came uncertainty about the team's future commitment to outspending its market size.
Since then, the Padres have shed talent and payroll, and enter the new season with lowered expectations. After a disappointing season that saw the Padres go 82-80 and miss the postseason, they're projected to win 81 games by FanGraphs.com in 2024.
Previously announced in December, the look of the jersey patch was finally revealed last week. In addition to the jersey patch, Petco Park will host a celebration of life for Seidler on March 23.
