One of the worst parts of sports is the injuries that occur. They take so much of the fun out of the games, but they are a reality of it all.

Over the last few weeks, the San Diego Padres have dealt with multiple injuries to some of their key players down the stretch of the season. Despite these, the team has found some footing, and they have kept their slim playoff hopes alive.

But at some point, things will need to be dealt with. Star third baseman Manny Machado has been dealing with a nagging elbow injury for some time now, and he is going to have surgery done on it soon.

He wants to wait until the Padres are officially eliminated from playoff contention to undergo the procedure, but it seems to be getting worse. The issue has been lingering, and it has really affected him over the last few weeks of the season.

Once he gets the surgery done, it will likely take a good amount of time for his recovery. Manager Bob Melvin gave an update on how long Machado would be out once he does get the procedure taken care of.

“When you get in there you get a little better idea of how bad it is,” Melvin said. “So I think the timeline could be shorter. I think [six months] could be on the long end of the timeline from what I’m hearing, but I’m not a doctor.”

San Diego will likely be heading to the offseason soon, so at least Machado can recover during that time. He has put it off, but even he knows that it is something that he shouldn't really mess with.

"We were trying to avoid it as much as we can," Machado said of the surgery. "But unfortunately [the injury] has just put us in that situation, and you know what, it's probably going to make me better, going to make us all better. Just get it done, get ready for next year, come back and be healthy."

As the year winds down for the Padres, this will be a decision to make of when to get it done. The team needs their star player ready for next season, so the sooner the better in all likelihood.
