Yankees Extend Texas Rangers Losing Streak

The Texas Rangers have dropped a season-high four in a row after Thursday's loss to the New York Yankees in the series opener.

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Rangers’ losing streak has hit a season-high four, as the New York Yankees took the opener of the four-game series 4-2 Monday night at Globe Life Field.

The Rangers and Houston Astros are tied for first in the American League West at 14-11. Texas was last tied for the division lead on April 13 with the Los Angeles Angels.

Down 3-0, the Rangers put a scare into New York starter Gerrit Cole in the sixth. The Rangers loaded the bases with nobody out and Adolis García, the reigning American League Player of the Week, at the plate.

García struck out, but Jonah Heim and Ezequiel Duran drove in runs with balls that didn’t leave the infield. Heim reached on a fielder’s choice (Cole dropped the return throw to first on a potential double-play) and Duran beat out a slow roller to third.

The Yankees battered Texas starter Andrew Heaney in the second with back-to-back solo home runs from DJ LeMahieu and Gleyber Torres. New York (15-11) proceeded to load the bases with only one out, but Heaney limited the damage to one more run.

Heaney recovered and went six innings, giving up those three runs, four hits and striking out six, while recording a quality start. The lefty threw 97 pitches, with 37 in that second inning, and dropped to 2-2.

Struggling Rangers reliever José Leclerc gave a solo homer to former Rangers catcher Jose Trevino in the ninth.

Yankees slugger and defending AL MVP Aaron Judge left the game in the fourth inning with right hip discomfort. The Rangers were without regular third baseman Josh Jung and outfielder Travis Jankowski, who both left the Wednesday loss at the Cincinnati Reds with minor injuries.

Texas staff ace Jacob deGrom (2-0, 3.04) gets the start in Friday night’s second game, with Clarke Schmidt (0-2, 6.30) going for New York. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
