Texas Rangers Win Series, Rout Angels Again

The Texas Rangers came back to win the last two games and the road series against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Texas Rangers claimed another series with a wild 16-8 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday afternoon at Angel Stadium.

The American League West-leading Rangers (20-13) are 3-0 against division rivals in series this season. Texas beat the Houston Astros (2-1) and Oakland Athletics (2-1) in series last month.

The Angels (19-17) fell two games behind Texas after moving into a tie atop the division with Friday’s walk-off win.

The Rangers leave Anaheim for another AL West series at the Seattle Mariners starting Monday night.

Texas made up for an off outing from Martín Pérez, who saw his streak of going at least 5.0 innings snapped at 36 starts. It was the fourth-longest such streak in club history.

Even though the lefty lasted just 3 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs, the Rangers once again pounded Angels pitching, including starter José Suarez. It was second consecutive game with double-digit runs after routing Los Angeles 10-1 on Saturday night to even the series.

Texas has scored at least 10 runs on nine occasions already this season. The Rangers did it just 10 times all of last year.

Ezequiel Duran, Josh Smith and Adolis García hit home runs for the Rangers. Smith was an in-game replacement in left field for Travis Jankowski, who left early with a hamstring injury.

Seven different Rangers drove in at least one run. Leody Taveras went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. García drove in three on his seventh-inning blast.

Texas has a team-record 221 runs through the first 33 games.

Robbie Grossman did have his 14-game hitting streak end after a 0-for-5 showing. It tied the longest of his career and was the second-longest current streak in the Majors.

Josh Sborz (1-1) pitched two innings in relief of Pérez and was awarded the win. Cole Ragans and José Leclerc went the first 3 1/3 innings. Leclerc gave up a solo homer to Hunter Renfroe in the ninth.

Before the game, a moment of silence was observed for the victims of the Allen mall mass shooting.

Jon Gray (1-1, 4.40) starts for Texas in the opener of the three-game Seattle series. The Mariners counter with Logan Gilbert (1-1, 4.01) for the 8:40 p.m. CT start.
