Red Sox Get Extremely Encouraging Injury Update On Star Infielder Trevor Story

Boston got some good news this week about one of its stars

The Boston Red Sox may get a major boost sooner rather than later.

Boston infielder Trevor Story had to undergo off-season elbow surgery and at one point there was fear that he would miss the entire 2023 season. Until he's back on the field that will always be a possibility because there's no way for sure to know how his elbow will react to rehab, but all things seem to be looking up.

A best case scenario for Story likely would be to return to the field for Boston around the midway point of the season. That still seems like a possibility as the club got positive update this past week, according to The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.

"(Red Sox manager Alex Cora) says Story has been great in the dugout during games," McCaffrey said. "He’s on the same rehab schedule but is set to start throwing in two weeks (14 weeks post surgery) and hitting in four weeks (16 weeks post surgery)."

If Boston were to get Story back into the mix in any capacity this season it would be a massive boost for the club. The two-time All-Star appeared in just 94 games for Boston in 2022 but showed impressive power and phenomenal defense. He had 16 home runs and 66 RBIs over that stretch. Story struggled out the gate last season, but began to turn it around before suffering injuries.

Adding Story's bat to a lineup that already seems to be improved -- although in a very small sample size -- could go a long way. Many have speculated that the Red Sox would finish near or at the bottom of the American League East standings. If the Red Sox can stay in contention until the All-Star break, adding a player of Story's caliber to the lineup could be a move that helps Boston make its way back to the postseason.

It still is very early, but the fact that there have been no hiccups so far with Story's rehab is a positive sign in itself. Hopefully we will see him back at Fenway Park sooner rather than later.
